"Winter Smiles" pencil on bockingford sketch paper, by Lyn Hurring

Been doodling away at this one off and on for the last couple of months.  Got kind of carried away with the patterns in the scarf, but I think it came out looking very snuggly and warm. Every time I look at it I think of the comforting smell and warmth of wool, and I feel all kind of warm inside.....Anyhoo, winter is almost over in my little part of the world - Bring on Spring!!

Thought I would let you in on the kind of materials I use to create most of my illustrations; at  least, these are my current favourites.  I will no doubt be trying other materials over time, but at the moment I'm sticking with these:

what's in the photo:

  1. Pad of watercolour paper, 140 lb acid free, "The Langton" made by Daler-Rowney.
  2. Watercolour pencils - Faber Castel Albrecht Durer (top right)
  3. Graphite pencils - HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, 9B (bottom right)
  4. Standard pencil - 2B, ruler and pencil sharpener.(top centre) - My eraser is missing in action!
  5. Synthetic paint brushes of various sizes - flat, round, fine etc (bottom centre)
  6. Faber Castell ink pens - fine, superfine, medium & broad. (top left)

Wonderful, wonderful illustrations!  A thought provoking story too; I think I enjoyed this more than the kids!

As well as illustrating and painting I love reading, so I'm going to share with you the books I currently have on the go:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, by Stieg Larsson.

Just about finished this one - a really great read with plenty of mystery and twists in it's tail!

Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, by Jeanette Winterson

Just started this one, and finding it really enjoyable.  A humorous insight into growing up with a religiously-excessive parent.  Good lunch-time reading!

I wanted to show you my lovely, cozy little studio, here in Dunedin, NZ.  I do all my best work here, though have to admit I still manage to spread my art stuff all round the house as well.  The family don't seem to mind luckily.

It is a great little room for doing artwork, plenty of sun, and lots of comfiness around me, which is important.  I like to have some music playing while I work, so the kids bought me a little pink & white stereo which now sits on my art table.  It's also a great room for reading and chilling out for a bit.

Hi there, welcome to my blog.  I love illustrating, drawing, painting, being generally creative.  I especially love creating characters and drawings for children to fall in love with, and hopefully some of you grown ups too!
